The Buffalo/Niagara Falls Area

This is probably the best softball area in the state at this time. Between the various town leagues, town travel teams, independent travel teams and the elite travel teams at all age levels, 10 & under thru 23 & under, there are literally thousands of girls playing fastpitch in Buffalo!
They have the Niagara Frontier Fastpitch Softball League. This league is made up of the area’s independent teams; players can come from any area to play on these teams. These teams are determined by try-outs or "by invitation only."
This league consists of approximately 60 teams.
9 teams of 12 & under
16 teams, 14 & under
16 teams, 16 & under
10 teams, 18 & under
8 teams of 23 & under

The teams have a regular schedule and travel to various fields to play each other.

The town ball travel teams also have a league; it’s the Metro Buffalo League, and players must live in the town that the team represents.

A lot of the independent teams practice year round. When we played in Buffalo this summer there were notices for tryouts for the various teams; tryouts are scheduled in late August and September for the next summer's teams. Many of the teams charged a fee just to try out.
Over the last few years we’ve had tours of some of the teams’ winter facilities. They’re in warehouses, storefronts, vacant businesses, school gyms, private gyms, etc. equipped with pitching mounds and pitching walls. There are batting machines, soft toss set-ups, misc. exercise equipment. And the girls start playing fastpitch with this preparation at 6-7 years old. There are 10 & under teams in most organizations, with tournaments for 10 & under only.
Now, as these girls get older, they move up as a team to 12 & under then 14 & under, and so on. The tryouts let the coaches see if there may be someone out there to fill a weaker spot on the team, but the same girls basically stay together year after year. The level of play is way above the level in the Rochester area; that’s why Section 6 teams routinely beat Section 5 teams in high school interregional play.
