By the rules of most national organizations, (ASA, for example), a player must be 10 years old or younger on January 1 to be eligible to play on a 10 and under team - 10U. If you turn 11 on January 2, you are still eligible to play in a 10U league for that year. The same is true for 12U, 14U and so on.

NOTE: Some local town ball leagues use a different date, Aug. 1, for example.
All national groups (ASA, NSA, WASA, NASF) use the January 1 date. One of the first things we could do locally would be to try to set all local dates to January 1. If a good town team or town travel team goes to a tournament in Buffalo or Syracuse, which all use the national rules, the first thing you notice is that the other players look a lot older than your team. Eight months is a big difference when you are only 12 or 13 years old, especially if you play 12U. Your competition could be all 13 ½, and you are facing them with a team of 11 & 12 year olds.
