March 1, 2016 COLLEGES
Most College Teams have filled their rosters and are in full practice mode.
Teams are getting back in shape for the 2016 Fastpitch Softball Season. Many of our
local College teams will be heading South in the next couple weeks. Fields here are still snow covered
and it's much too cold to swing a bat and make contact in 30*F weather.

In the South the daily temperature are already in the 60*F and 70*F range. Many of the Southern
Colleges host Tournaments with Southern and Northern Teams competing against each other.
The local College Coaches usually find a good tournament and try to get invited back or apply
to play. From Our own experience the Girls Love going South this time of the year. Practices and Games
take up some of the time, but Beaches, Shopping, Theme Parks and Mega Malls make up the rest
of their time. Plus friendships are made with players from the other teams, which continue
year after year.

HIGH SCHOOLS: Most of the area High Schools are holding tryouts or will hold tryouts
with in the next couple weeks. It's seems like we were at Sectional Finals and couple months
ago and now it's already the 2016 High School Season. The long term weather forecasts
seem to believe it will be a warm Spring.

For the Girls trying out: Keep busy during tryouts. Look like you want to be there, do your best
and then some! Don't stand there with your glove on your head and talking to girl friends while
the Coach is talking or deminstrating how it should be done. Having been there I've seen Coaches choose
a lesser skilled player who is willing to learn over a player with skills but has an additude. The Coach has
2 hours a day for roughly three weeks to build, train and put a team on the field that's ready to represent
their school.
That's fielding, pitching, hitting, outfield, plays, stretching, medical, etc. ......in 3 weeks.
In that 2 hours, Coaches are also getting out equipment, setting up cages, dealing with absent or late players,
controlling up to 18 High School Girls..... with cell phones.
But, it's been done every year for over 50 years and everything always seems to get done and most
Coaches, Players, Parents and Schools have Great Seasons with the Section V trophy at the end
of the season.

Good Luck to Everyone!

JOSIE'S READY TO HIT A HOME RUN - AT WHAT AGE SHOULD THEY START?
Even at 3,4 or 5 years old, you can pitch a wiffle ball to them and see if they can hit or catch. If anything, it would increase hand/eye coordination and help in later years in any sport. I think a lot of people would be surprised to see how well a 4 or 5 year old can hit a wiffle ball with a plastic bat with only a couple days practice. In a few days they start adjusting and start to clobber the ball over your head.

LONG-TERM GOALS:

1. Get more girls of all ages involved in fastpitch softball.

2. If a local fastpitch association can be formed and can organize leagues, games and tournaments in a seven-county area, or the Section V area, there would be an organization to start in motion a master plan to build a centrally located softball complex where local leagues, sectional games, tournaments, etc. could be played. This would end the need to beg for fields, pay for fields, or kiss someones bu-- to get the use of a diamond for a few hours.
The more people who get involved, the easier it would be to build something like this. Both Buffalo and Syracuse have complexes built with public funding which are strictly for fastpitch softball!

3. Keep girls involved at all ages. Buffalo has an open league with no age limit. Females of all ages, from young girls to women who have graduated from college and have children of their own, still play in fastpitch leagues.

With Title IX and all the money spent on men's sports facilities in our area, it it is not that far-fetched to believe that a local complex could be built.
