TIPS
TO HELP YOU LOOK GOOD AT
SCHOOL SOFTBALL TEAM TRY-OUTS
1.
Stretch and loosen up before trying out! Many
girls may not have thrown a ball or swung a bat since the end of last season.
You don't want to pull, rip, or strain something in try-outs, causing you
to miss a part of the season.
2 . Be quick! if a coach sends a ball your way don't stroll over and leisurely
pick it up, dash over, make the catch and play. If you're quick
and sharp on the easy plays the coach knows you will be quicker and sharper
on the tougher plays even under pressure.
3. Be aggressive, try to make the play. Don't stop and say: "I
can't get that." Sometimes a coach will purposely hit one
they know you can't get to. If it comes down to 2 girls trying out for the
same spot, who do you think the coach will choose, the girl that tried her
hardest and missed or the girl that didn't even attempt to make a play on
the ball?
4. When hitting, use an aggressive swing at the ball. Take a hard
swing even if you miss the ball, the coach sees you have potentional and
are trying. Don't take half a swing, miss, and then turn and joke about
it with your friends. The coaches know most girls haven't swung
a bat since the end of last season, but if you get up there and seriously
try, and look aggressive, you have potential. If you get up and half swing
the coach invisions the ball rolling back to the pitcher for an easy out
at first.
5. Throw hard. You don't want to throw hard enough to break someones
hand, but you don't want a looping rainbow type throw. Most girls
trying out aren't in top shape at this time of the year, especially in our
area. You can't even go outside and throw in the driveway until April. At
any level of softball a straight level throw is the most effective method
of making a play. A looping or rainbow throw is actually much harder to
catch, you don't know if it will be at your feet or over your head. With
a straight level throw to your glove, you don't have to stretch, dive or
jump. You have a much better chance of making the play. How many times have
you seen a slow, 6 foot underhand throw to a baseman get dropped, letting
the runner get to that base?
6. Have fun, be youself. Don't be nervous. If you didn't think you
you could make the team, you wouldn't be trying out. If you have
one bad day of tryouts, don't give up, come back the next day and show the
coaches what you can do. Don't be intimidated by older girls, they should
be better they've played longer.
7. TO RETURNING PLAYERS: Try your hardest, set an example to the
younger girls. Many times the returning player will not even try to make
the tougher plays in try-outs, knowing she's guaranteed a spot on the team,
she gives half an effort. She's thinking; "Everyone knows what I can
do in a game." That's probably true, but you may have a younger
girl who has made every catch, made every play and hit everything thrown
at her and at the end of the week she gets cut.....wondering why did I get
cut? To her, she did her best and that wasn't good enough. Does she then
go try-out for laccross or track never returning to softball?
